China’s buying strategy may still favor U.S. soybeans later this year

An ag economist says he’s cautiously optimistic that China will keep pace with soybean purchases this year.

Dan O’Brien with Kansas State University says it’s not unusual that they’ve turned to Brazil right now. “Given the skill of Chinese buyers, they’ll go with the cheapest soybeans to start with harvest coming on in South America. That’s probably where they’ll go for now.”

However, he says, “Once they move through a fair amount of those supplies, they still maybe involved with U.S. supplies for the next several months.”

USDA Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Luke Lindberg tells Brownfield there will be several opportunities for China to purchase above the 25 million metric ton requirement.“ The President will likely see President Xi as many as four times this year. Usually around those presidential level visits, we have a great opportunity to revisit and continue to advocate for our producers and that’s what we’re gearing up for this year.”

O’Brien says there are several factors that will impact soybean futures in 2026, but increased demand for China could help.
