China’s hog herd continues to decline as ASF spreads
The size of China’s hog herd has dropped again as African Swine Fever continues spread across the country.
The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture reports the number of live pigs in the country is 23 percent lower than a year ago. The sow herd has dropped 4 percent on the month and is nearly 24 percent lower than May of 2018.
There have been 130 outbreaks since August of last year.
African Swine Fever is highly transmissible and deadly to pigs, but it does not impact human health or food safety.
