Chop Local an online farmer’s market for meat

An Iowa farmer is growing a business she describes as an online farmer’s market for meat.

Katie Olthoff of Stanhope says she co-founded Chop Local during the pandemic because so many Midwestern farmers could not get their livestock to market.

“They were looking for more ways to connect with their customers, and we knew that technology offered great solutions for them. But it might’ve been out of their skillset, a little bit difficult for them. So we created Chop Local in order to really help facilitate that and to make it easier for them.”

Speaking to Brownfield during the Midwest Meat Summit in Des Moines Thursday, she said Chop Local features about 70 farms and butcher shops in 28 states.

“There’s just been a huge shift towards online grocery ordering, millions of transactions from meat-specific companies online every year. And we want to make sure our farmers are getting a piece of that pie.”
