Choppers are moving in on corn silage harvest
Michigan crop advisor Jason Stegink tells Brownfield recent dry weather is starting to impact yields and trigger corn silage harvest.
“It’s a touch early,” he shares. “Our silage guys have got a few operations that started last week and there’s more of them stepping into it. You see choppers and trucks on the road now and that’s kind of an indicator of where we’re at, a little bit earlier in the season this year.”
The USDA says Michigan’s corn crop is rated 59 percent good to excellent with 95 percent in the dough stage, 66 percent dented, and eight percent mature. Corn silage harvest is 15 percent complete.
Soybeans are 26 percent dropping leaves with 59 percent of the crop good to excellent.
Dry beans are 59 percent dropping with condition rated 61 percent good to excellent. Sugarbeets are rated 64 percent good to excellent and five percent harvested.
Third cutting of alfalfa is 82 percent complete and fourth cutting is at 39 percent.
Apple picking is continuing along with many vegetable harvests.
