CHS to operate COFCO grain terminal near St. Louis

The nation’s largest farmer-owned cooperative will soon operate a grain facility owned by China’s largest food and ag company near St. Louis.

CHS Inc., will take over operations of the Cahokia transloading terminal, owned by COFCO International Ltd., starting January 31. The terminal sits along the Mississippi River, has access to all seven Class I railroads in North America and is a high-speed rail and truck-to-barge loading facility. CHS is leasing the facility from COFCO International, not purchasing it.

In 2024, GROWMARK, another ag cooperative, sold its minority stake of the COFCO grain terminal to the Chinese-owned company. The transaction raised national security concerns, but the companies closed the transaction. COFCO International has owned the entire grain terminal since.

The Cahokia site becomes part of CHS’s Midwest grain network, which includes about 20 locations across Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.
