Climate change and farm management
Ohio’s state climatologist says climate change will continue to impact how farmers manage their operations. Aaron Wilson is the ag weather specialist for Ohio State University Extension. “What we need to manage for is a pretty rapid oscillation back and forth between very wet and very dry conditions,” he says.
He tells Brownfield that water utilization will become increasingly more important in the coming years. “Thinking about storage of water in the long term,” he says. “Making sure that perhaps we’re collecting some of that moisture when we’ve got a lot of moisture around collecting that rainfall and being able to have it when we really could use it.”
Wilson says weather remains one of the biggest challenges farmers face each year and having climate-smart practices in place will help them better manage production challenges.
