Climate change is a top issue and agriculture needs to be ready

The president and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives says climate change is a top issue, especially among millennials.

Chuck Conner says he thinks Congress will act on climate change and the agriculture industry needs to be ready.

“Anytime you have that sort of strong sentiment among a group of voters, Congress is likely to act to try and do something,” he says. “We need to be ready for that debate because right now agriculture is being blamed for every ill that occurs out there in terms of climate change. That is not the case and we just need to be ready to tell them about the great story of American agriculture and all that we’ve done with sustainability and doing more with less.”

He tells Brownfield he expects a lot of debate on climate change in 2020.

“Congress will not be able to, in my view, come to an agreement in 2020 because of the presidential election,” he says. “But, after the new president is decided whether that is Trump or somebody else then I think that’s going to be the right time.”

Conner, a Benton County native, previously served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. He spoke to Brownfield at Ceres Solutions’ 2019 Knowledge Event in Perrysville, Indiana.
