Climatologist sees no indication of early freeze event

Dennis Todey, director of USDA’s Midwest Climate Hub, based in Ames, Iowa

Current weather forecasts indicate a low probability for a widespread early freeze across the Midwest.

Dennis Todey with USDA’s Midwest Climate Hub says, right now, he’s not seeing anything that would indicate an early freeze event.

“The most recent 8-14 day outlook and 3-4 week outlook from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center are keeping us warmer than average into mid-late September,” Todey says. “That’s a good thing right now, from two standpoints. One, it can help us put on a few more degree days, which we have been slow to accumulate here recently—and it reduces the chances of any kind of an early freeze.”

Todey says the fall precipitation outlook looks fairly normal, although rain chances are a bit higher for the Plains States, and parts of Minnesota and Iowa.
