Climatologist: Upper Midwest weather pattern “quiet”

The state climatologist for Iowa says the weather pattern has been mostly quiet across the Upper Midwest.

Justin Glisan with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says the jet stream has brought some arctic air to the region. “We’ve been colder than average over the last 7-to-10 days across the state and much of the ag belt in the Upper Midwest. The storm track is stuck south of us, so you think of Missouri, Illinois, and through the Eastern Corn Belt. While we have been having colder temperatures, we haven’t seen a lot of precipitation.”

He tells Brownfield some parts of the Upper Midwest are in a snow drought. “In fact, if you look across the Central to Western Corn Belt, anywhere from 7-to-20 inches below average snowfall for this time of year.”

Glisan says that creates some concerns about dry soils heading into the next growing season.
