Coalition asks Trump to eliminate tariffs

Americans for Free Trade, a coalition of businesses and trade organizations, is asking President Trump to eliminate tariffs as part of the U.S.-China trade negotiations.

In a letter, the coalition says a deal should also address China’s unfair trade practices, avoid an enforcement mechanism that would lead to more tariffs, and clarify how a tariff exemption process would work.

The coalition is also requesting an economic assessment by the Trump Administration to examine the costs of tariffs for businesses and consumers.

The group says that a deal that fails to lift tariffs would represent a broken promise to hardworking Americans.

The letter is signed by about 150 coalition partners representing companies that employ tens of millions of American workers.
