A new partnership between Ohio 4-H and ScottsMiracle-Gro is helping youth explore careers in agriculture.

Franklin County 4-H member Miles Ott recently participated in a hands-on mowing clinic to learn more about turfgrass management.

“I was actually really surprised to find out how much science goes into the turf,” he says. “They have to cut the grass at a certain level. They have to fertilize it with all of these different products to keep it looking good all year.”

Beth Boomershine, 4-H extension educator, says career exploration is an important part of 4-H youth development.

“These are the events where kids learn from professionals and have exposure to real-life experiences to gain new skills,” she says. “These are the experiences that help prepare them for work and life.”

Boomershine says exposing members to non-traditional career paths is helping build the next generation of industry professionals.
