Competition intensifies for cropland close to SE Wisconsin dairies

An ag real estate appraiser says farmland values are surging in southeastern Wisconsin.
David Kluck with Compeer Financial tells Brownfield the market has risen 25 to 35 percent since December.
“And that is reflective of a limited amount of cropland available for sale, and a push into the market by farming operations that have a non-farm economic influence to it.”
He says large dairies are seeking nearby cropland to apply manure.
“Location’s a big factor because hauling manure is a function of hauling water, so anything that becomes available within a radius of say three miles of a dairy operation perks their interest up in wanting to acquire it.”
He says hauling manure is costly and comes with liability.
Kluck made these comments during an upcoming Compeer Financial appraisal podcast, a content partnership with Brownfield Ag News.
