Concerns about potential tariffs in 2025

The director of trade policy at the U.S. Grains Council is concerned about potential tariffs disrupting trade efforts in 2025.

Andrew Brandt tells Brownfield…

“President-elect Trump is coming back,” he says. “He has not hidden the fact that he did tariffs the first time and he intends to do them again. He’s spoken of tariffs against China and tariffs against Mexico. Those are two very important markets to us.”

He says long-term tariffs could hurt farmers and their bottom line.

“It could pose challenges for us,” he says. “It did last time, but I think our hope is the leverage from the tariffs is a means to an end and not a permanent shift that could disadvantage us in the global markets.”

Brandt says the organization will continue to work on expanding export opportunities for their farmer members.

Brownfield interviewed Brandt at the 2024 National Association of Farm Broadcasting Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.
