Congressman says farmer feedback matters

Incorporating producer feedback into ag legislation.

Congressman Tracey Mann from the 1st District in Kansas says farmers and ranchers have been very clear about their priorities in the farm bill and crop insurance is at the top of their list.

He tells Brownfield producers have also been very concerned about the rising cost of production. “You look at labor, you look at repairs and maintenance, like the cost of parts to fix your tractors, combines, planters,” he says.  “All those things continue to go up and squeezes margins.  Unless we have really good yields — our ag producers are going to be in tough shape.”

Mann says that’s why finishing the farm bill this year is crucial.  But can it happen?  “It’s absolutely possible to get it done, but the question is is there the political will to get it done,” he says. “The first step in the process is to get a good bill out of Committee, which we did.”

Brownfield interviewed Mann during the NCBA’s Young Cattlemen’s Conference in Washington, D.C.
