Conservation a top priority for northeast Iowa cow-calf producer

A northeast Iowa cattle producer says conservation is one of his biggest priorities.
Damien Matt operates a cow-calf operation in Fayette County and says, “We’re trying to move cows daily to fresh grass, allowing for a maximum amount of regrowth behind them. We’ve also tried to establish some warm season native annual grasses.”
He tells Brownfield he wants to implement more practices while cattle prices are high.
“A lot of conservation practices go hand in hand with forage production. I think it’s important that we start exploring these and start implementing some of these practices now to ensure profitability as these prices come off their historic highs.”
Matt says ‘starting small’ is his best advice for other producers looking to incorporate conservation within their cattle operations.
He spoke to Brownfield at the 2025 Iowa Cattle Industry Convention.
