Considering less fall tillage

A carbon specialist wants farmers to consider doing less fall tillage.

Clay Craighton with Agoro Carbon Alliance says depending on certain circumstances and soil types, tillage is necessary.

“But do we need to do it to the extent that we normally did is the question. Where we used to field cultivate, could a vertical till bar work instead, or strips potentially like that too. I’ve even talked to some farmers who do fall manure application and they’re even switching their bars to VT for a little bit less compaction.”

He tells Brownfield farmers could also preserve topsoil and potentially qualify for a carbon payment.

“Because if we reduce the depth disturbance we’re looking at, or reduce a pass, then that’s how you can get involved in a program like ours.”

Craighton says the Agoro Carbon Alliance takes a personalized approach to help tailor conservation plans for individual farms.
