Cool temps holding back Indiana crops
Cooler than normal temperatures last week is not what the state’s corn and soybean crops needed. The Indiana field office of the National Ag Statistics Service reports 28 percent of the corn crop silking, well behind the 5-year average of 64 percent. 33 percent of the soybeans are blooming, slightly behind last year, but well behind the 5-year average.
As of Sunday, July 19, corn was rated 65 percent good to excellent, soybeans were rated 63 percent good to excellent.
Winter wheat harvest is virtually complete and the condition of pastures held steady, with 70 percent rated good to excellent.
Topsoil moisture is 76 percent adequate to surplus, 81 percent of the state’s subsoil is reported adequate to surplus.
