Corn acreage up from March, but the numbers will change

The USDA’s corn planted area number was larger than expected, while soybeans and wheat fell short of projections, but these numbers will change.

The USDA says 91.475 million acres of corn were planted this year, topping expectations and up from March’s prospective plantings report, but down 5% from 2023’s total of 94.641 million acres and with 3.356 million acres unplanted. 94% of anticipated acres were biotech, 1% more than last year Harvested area is seen at 83.438 million acres, compared to 86.513 million a year ago.

That was prior to widespread flooding in portions of the northwest Corn Belt that will likely lead to at least some replanting or acreage switching.

That will also impact soybeans, with planted area currently pegged at 86.1 million acres, down from March, but up 3% from the prior year’s total of 83.6 million and with 12.767 million acres left to plant when the report was assembled. This guess does include second crop planted area of 4%, steady with the year before. 96% of soybean acreage has herbicide resistant traits, compared to 95% last year. Harvested area is projected at 85.261 million acres, compared to 82.356 million a year ago.

All wheat acreage is estimated at 47.24 million, 5% less than last year’s final of 49.575 million, with winter wheat down 8% at 33.805 million acres and spring wheat up 1% at 11.27 million acres. Harvested area for all types of wheat is expected to be 38.785 million acres, compared to 37.272 million in 2023. Winter wheat harvested area is seen at 25.808 million acres, compared to 24.683 million last year, with spring wheat harvested area at 10.885 million acres, compared to 10.985 million a year ago.

The USDA’s updated production projections are out July 12th.
