Crop diseases are running rampant across much of the Midwest.

Southeast Iowa corn and soybean grower Logan Lyon says significant amounts of early tar spot came as no surprise with record rainfall in July.

“Most folks were expecting and anticipating (tar spot), but what really came out of the woodwork this year that we haven’t seen is that southern rust pressure.”

In southwest Minnesota, farmer Mark Enninga tells Brownfield the environment has been ripe for disease this summer.

“So while we have a good crop out there, we are seeing a lot of evidence of southern corn rust is a big one that I’m seeing. In soybeans, seeing a lot of areas with white mold (and) red crown rot.”

Enninga and Lyon both say it was a good investment to apply fungicide this year.
