Corn growers urge support for USMCA as “unprecedented” review nears

The National Corn Growers Association is emphasizing the importance of the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement ahead of this summer’s review of the trade deal.

NCGA director of public policy for trade and biotechnology Nancy Martinez calls this a critical time for the future of the agreement.

“This is an unprecedented review, we’ve never had this review before. We have data to show and stories to back it up about how beneficial USMCA has been for the U.S. corn industry.”

She tells Brownfield USMCA represents 1.8 billion bushels of corn demand, contributing $20 billion to the U.S. economy.

“As we all know, we’re not in control of a lot of things. Global disruptions, weather, other parts of the economy, and USMCA really provides that guaranteed market access for top two markets.”

Martinez says Mexico is the largest importer of U.S. corn and Canada is the biggest customer of U.S. ethanol.

The USMCA review is scheduled to begin July 1st.
