Corn harvest varies across Missouri

The director of agronomy services at MFA Incorporated says corn harvest is variable across Missouri.

“There certainly are some good areas out there.”

Doug Spaunhorst tells Brownfield the lower yielding fields are being harvested north of Highway 36 and in central Missouri, the corn has high yields as combines don’t waste time.

“From what I’ve heard, yields have ranged from 220 to 230 bushels/acre and if you get into the river bottoms, it’s better than that.”

He says in southwest Missouri, pollination issues from the extreme heat limited the corn yield potential.

“On dryland corn, yields range from 60 to 180 bushels/acre. The majority are in the 100 to 120 bushel/acre range and as you go further west into southeast Kansas, yields are lower than what we see in Missouri.”

In southeast Missouri, Spaunhorst says corn yields are higher than average.

“We are seeing yields from 220 to 240 bushels/acre. That part of the world has a lot more irrigation and from what I’ve been hearing, about 30 more bushels can be tacked onto that average.”

The previous crop progress report from USDA had corn harvest at 13% complete in Missouri. An updated look at harvest will come from USDA on Monday afternoon.
