Corn prevent plant reminders

The training supervisor with the Country Financial Crop Claims division says the wet spring has some corn farmers asking about prevent plant coverage.

Marty McDonald says the final planting date for full coverage for most eastern Corn Belt farmers is June 5th with coverage dropping a percent per day up to June 25th.

“After the 25th, you can still plant corn, but your guarantee is reduced to the same as if it would have been prevent planted, which is 60% of your timely planted guarantee,” he says.

He tells Brownfield producers have the option of switching crops or even planting a cover crop, but each of those decisions would impact a prevent plant corn claim.

“If we can’t get anything in the ground, it looks at what you’ve done in the past and then we subtract out what you got done this year.”  He says, “And those are the acres that are eligible for prevented planting.”

McDonald says farmers facing planting challenges should work closely with their crop insurance agents throughout the remainder of the planting season.
