Corn rootworm scouting in August
An agronomy service representative with Syngenta says farmers should be scouting for corn rootworm.
Aaron Kromann says rootworm pressure hasn’t been as prevalent as this time last year. “I kind of expected it to be a lot worse. To date, I haven’t seen as many (beetles) as I was expecting too given the mild winter we had.”
But he tells Brownfield the pest could pick up steam in August. “There are still plenty of rootworm larvae still feeding on the crop. I imagine we’ll see quite a few more beetles popping up over the next few weeks.”
Kromann says infestations comprise root systems which leads to lodged or downed corn. He spoke to Brownfield at the 2024 Ag PhD Field Day near Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
