Corn yields surprisingly good in parts of North Dakota

Corn yields are better than expected in some parts of the Upper Midwest.

Brevant Seeds agronomist Lewis Kuppler is based in North Dakota and says the harvest is about 25 percent complete.

“Overall, the crop is surprisingly good. We were expecting probably less than what we got, I would say everybody was wondering ‘we started off in good shoes (and) continued in good shoes until about July and then it just dried up.”

He tells Brownfield the lack of moisture toward the end of the growing season raised concerns.

“When it dries up like that we worry about test weight, worry about the standability of that crop, we worry about a lot of things. And to be frankly honest with you, it’s been pretty good.”

Kuppler says corn yields are not as good as last year, but better than average.
