Costs of California Prop 12 too high
The general counsel for the National Pork Producers Council says if California’s Proposition 12 goes into effect pork producers will lose because of the cost to retrofit their operations to comply with the law. Michael Formica tells Brownfield Ag News, “You won’t be made whole and the industry won’t be made whole because California consumers are consuming all of the parts of the pig. That pig gets broken up and sent everywhere and that’s a real, real problem.”
And Formica says the impact on California consumers will be harsh, “If they really, truly wanted this then they would all be going to the grocery store and asking for these premium products and that’s what they’re going to end up with. They’re going to see your regular old pork chops are now going to become a luxury premium, a premium product.”
NPPC and American Farm Bureau are urging the U.S. Supreme Court to take their case against Proposition 12. Brownfield interviewed Formica at the Iowa Pork Congress.
