Cotton, rice production both grow

The U.S. produced more cotton and rice in 2024 than 2023.

The USDA says upland cotton production was 13.946 million bales, up 2.196 million on the year and above December’s projection, with increased harvested area of 8.071 million acres canceling out a decrease in yield at 829 pounds per acre. 2023 upland production was 11.75 million bales with an average yield of 895 pounds per acre on harvested area of 6.302 million acres.

U.S. rice production last year was 222.133 million hundredweight, rising 2% on the year thanks to an improvement in the average yield to 7,748 pounds per acre on harvested area of 2.867 million acres. A year ago, rice totaled 217.991 million hundredweight with an average yield of 7,641 pounds per acre on harvested area of 2.853 million acres.

Domestic cotton ending stocks were up on the bigger crop and lower exports, while U.S. rice stocks fell on a higher domestic use guess.

Globally, the cotton production estimate was larger and rice production was smaller, with both largely due to adjustments for China.

The USDA’s next round of supply and demand estimates is out February 11th.
