Could the southwest monsoon season deliver relief from high winds in the WCB?
A climatologist says there could be some relief from high winds in the Western Corn Belt this summer.
Brian Fuchs says it’s been a common occurrence during the planting season, but that could change. “It looks like a pretty good summer high setting up over the desert southwest and so that would mean more northwest flow. That would mean more of an active weather pattern potentially in the Western Corn Belt and Central Plains area.”
He tells Brownfield another regional climate pattern will be in the mix. “The monsoon season in the southwest is looking to be early on arrival in July and maybe a little bit more active than we’ve seen in the past few years. So that alone could help break down that high as well if they get some more moisture in the air down there.”
Fuchs says lower wind speeds will be critical for crop development this summer to help slow down evaporation.
