Creating additional value for soybean farmers through renewable fuels

Brownfield's Kellan Heavican interviews Nebraska farmer Jay Hansen.

Eric Lawson with MEG Corp, a contractor that helps provide awareness for the renewable fuels industry, says additional demand for biodiesel can provide up to $2 per bushel of value.

But, he says, that’s only the beginning if farmers consume more of it. “It’s not quite readily available yet to pipeline it, it’s got to be blended offsite of the pipeline. We need suppliers to be handling it. What will push those suppliers to handle it is the demand from farmers asking for it.”

Southeast Nebraska farmer Jay Hansen tells Brownfield the additional market is helping support prices. “I don’t think we would’ve ever saw beans in the $11 or $12 without this renewable fuel push.”

He says the demand comes at an extremely critical time when farmers continue to face unprecedented financial pressure.
