Crop conditions in Nebraska are inconsistent

A south-central Nebraska farmer says corn and soybean crop conditions are extremely variable.

Randy Uhrmacher tells Brownfield that moisture has been hit-or-miss this spring. “I don’t see any records happening this year, at least on our farm, unless things turn and will be perfect here on out.”

According to the USDA, 70 percent of the corn crop is rated good to excellent, and 65 percent of soybeans are rated good to excellent.

He says weed pressure has been manageable.  “We just haven’t had enough rain to germinate the weeds or take away the herbicides that were there. We get just enough rain to activate them, but not too much rain that kind of washes them out, so they don’t work either.”

Ninety-nine percent of the winter wheat crop is headed, 40 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.
