Crop development rebounding for Nebraska farmer

South-central Nebraska farmer Mike Bergen says warmer temperatures and timely rains have sparked a noticeable improvement in crop conditions on his farm.

“The real term to describe this crop early on is uneven and a little stalled out. But, now, this corn is loving the 90 degree days, humidity and a full moisture profile.”

He tells Brownfield development is still slightly behind schedule. “We’re definitely catching up. I’m not sure we’ll see any tasseling by the Fourth of July. Maybe in some hot spots.”

And, he says, soybeans are a similar story. “The soybeans have been slow, especially soybeans that were planted after corn. The soybeans that were planted before corn look beautiful.”

Bergen says weather conditions are helping create a favorable environment for weed pressure, especially in soybeans.
