Crop farmer expects another year in the red

A Wisconsin crop farmer is expecting another year without profit.

Ken Rosenow raises corn and soybeans near Oconomowoc and works with the U.S. Grains Council.  He tells Brownfield the numbers don’t look good for 2025 right now. “I’ve got quite a few things bought already. I’ve got a few more things to do and you know, when I put the numbers together in a budget, it looks like we’re going to be in the red again this year.”

Rosenow says the commodity prices won’t affect his acreage decisions. “No, I usually don’t try to outsmart myself, so I pretty much keep with the same rotation and that generally works the best for us here.”

Rosenow says he shares production cost information when he travels to visit foreign corn buyers with the U.S. Grains Council. “When we go on these missions with the U.S. Grains Council, we kind of give them that information, too. They might not always like the price, but sometimes we don’t like it either.”

Like many farmers, Rosenow is hoping the market will turn around and make farming profitable again.
