Crop insurance changes present opportunities

A crop insurance specialist with Farm Credit Illinois says changes to the federal crop insurance program present opportunities for farmers.

Jack Young says farmers can protect even more of their crop in 2025 with improvements to the Enhanced Coverage Option, or ECO.

“The subsidy has actually increased a bit on that Enhanced Coverage Option.”  He says, “That is going to net result a little lower cost to the producer to go to the 90% or 95% coverage level. It is going to be a game changer I think for a lot of producers.”

He tells Brownfield the rest of the federal program remains unchanged.

“Your normal programs, your revenue protection, your yield protection, your area protection, are all functioning the same as what you’ve seen in the past,” he says.

Crop insurance decisions must be made by March 15th.  Young says farmers need to discuss potential enrollment in the ECO coverage option with their local crop insurance agent.

Brownfield spoke with Young at the Farm Credit Illinois Fielding Forward event in Champaign, IL.
