Crop insurance expert says 2025 bill gives key boost to federal coverage

A crop insurance expert says federal crop insurance received a boost in 2025.
“Overall, it was a needed shot in the arm,” said Tom Zacharias, president of National Crop Insurance Services.
Zacharias says the One Big Beautiful Bill included provisions to strengthen coverage.
“Increases in premium support for individual coverages, increases in premium support for the supplementals that fall on top of the deductible,” he said. “All of this to further increase participation.”
He tells Brownfield investments were made in the delivery system.
“Help the AIPs on their delivery and the agents as well. All the agents are extremely important in crop insurance. Farmers rely on the agents to work through the myriads of choices that they have in this program.”
Zacharias says the bill also helped expand crop insurance support for beginning farmers and ranchers.
He spoke to Brownfield at the 2025 NAFB Convention in Kansas City.
