CRP sign up ends Friday

The Conservation Reserve Program sign-up ends at the close of business Friday afternoon. Producers who want to offer eligible land for the CRP can enroll at the Farm Service Agency county office where their farm records are maintained.

Producers in the CRP take environmentally sensitive land out of production by entering into long-term contracts for 10 to 15 years, according to a news release issued by the USDA. They plant resource-conserving cover crops in exchange for rental payments, cost-share, and technical assistance. The program is structured to protect topsoil from erosion. In exchange, participants receive annual rental payments and up to 50 percent of the cost of establishing conservation practices.

The 2008 Farm Bill authorized USDA to maintain CRP enrollment up to 32 million acres.

Contracts awarded under this sign-up take effect October first.
