Cuban ambassador visits Minnesota farm
A top official from Cuba visited the farm of Minnesota Farm Bureau president Kevin Paap this week.
Paap says it was an honor hosting Miguel Fraga, the First Secretary at the Cuban Embassy.
“I actually had him in the combine (to) combine some soybeans and had a really good discussion about how we can work together.”
Paap tells Brownfield normalizing trade with Cuba makes sense.
“That’s a country that is only 90 miles away, 11 million people. But the big thing is they import between 70 to 80 percent of their food needs. Certainly, we have got to work with our neighbors.”
Paap is calling on Congress to pass legislation that would lift the Cuban embargo.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates the embargo costs the U.S. economy $1.2 billion annually, while Cuba cites its own losses at more than $753 billion.
