Cutting back on fall fertilizer? Consider phosphate
An extension nutrient management specialist says farmers looking to cut back on fall fertilizer should consider phosphate.
Daniel Kaiser with the University of Minnesota tells Brownfield data suggests minimal returns.
“I’ve been in Minnesota for 17 years and I’ve very rarely if ever seen a response where I’ve gotten any added yield adding phosphate when I’m above (certain levels).”
For farmers concerned about phosphate deficiencies going into next year.
“Looking at about 30 to 40 percent of what your actual removal is, I’ve had some success in our long-term field trials being able to maintain my soil tests where they haven’t planted with those types of application rates.”
Kaiser says phosphate is the easiest nutrient to make a decision on based on soil tests.
