Dairy continues to lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy is looking at ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) on the dairy farm.
Vice president of sustainability research Dr. Juan Tricarico says the Lifecycle Assessment tool helps researchers better understand dairy’s GHG footprint.
“The first study was focused on fluid milk, then the lifecycle assessment of cheese, weigh, yogurt (that we’re nearly finished with) and one on packaging that is done.”
Dairy accounts for only two percent of total manmade greenhouse gases in the U.S. and Tricarico tells Brownfield it’s becoming less all the time.
“We are, in effect, reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions almost on a daily basis. Because all of these improvements are the result of individual dairy farmers making decisions that are good for the sustainability of their business; economically, environmentally and socially.”
He says it’s the small things like frequently evaluating milking sequences or testing feed that keeps moving the needle in the right direction.
Tricarico spoke at last week’s Sustainable Agriculture Summit in Minneapolis.
