Dairy farm purchases roller mill to address infrastructure challenges

A Northeast Missouri dairy farm has made investments in its operation to meet logistical needs.

Eric Onan with Milk Source says finding a feed mill to fit the nutrition level for many cows was a challenge.

“Due to not having a dairy infrastructure here, we are going for about 450 to 500 microns in size and some of the mills (here) don’t accomplish that.”

The farm now sources corn from area farmers.

“So we’ve made investment to have a roller miller on farm so we can get the corn to be the size and overall form we’re looking for in utilization.”

Onan says overall it’s been a good investment, but says it doesn’t come without its own set of challenges like maintenance and overall repair cost.

Stangler recently interviewed Onan during a Missouri Dairy Summer Social event at Milk Source’s LaBelle Dairy in La Belle, Missouri.
