Dairy farmers ready for Race Day

The Indy 500 Milk Men with the historic bottle of milk.In just 9 days Rushville, Indiana dairy farmer Ken Hoeing will hand that famous bottle of milk to the winner of the Indy 500.

Hoeing says that historic sports prize has a storied history.  “It started back in 1933 when Louis Meyer asked for a bottle of buttermilk (after winning the Indy 500),” he says.  “It continued and then in the 1950’s it became an official tradition and the dairy farmers have kept the tradition going all these years..”

For both Hoenig and the rookie Milk Man, Delaware County farmer Alan Wright, presenting the bottle of milk is an honor… especially with Wright’s family history.  “Our family history goes back to 1933 milking at our present location,” he says.  “That happens to be the year that Louis Meyer asked for buttermilk in victory circle.  That pairs together with the long-standing tradition our family has had in Delaware County.”

Race Day is Sunday, May 25th and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

While Meyer chose buttermilk, today’s drivers have the choice of Whole, 2%, or Skim milk.  The most popular selection?  Two Percent.
