Dairy Foods Awareness Day in MI
Free dairy products samples were given out on the Capitol lawn Wednesday for Dairy Foods Awareness Day. Representing nearly 90 dairy processors, the event has been taking place for more than 20 years.
Terry Philibeck with Michigan’s Department of Agriculture says the state’s dairy industry has been expanding in recent years.
“One of the exhibitors here at Dairy Day at the Capitol is Philos Greek Yogurt and they took an existing facility that was making cheese and converted it to a yogurt manufacturing facility in Norton Shores, Michigan.”
He says processing needs to continue to expand as surplus milk is being processed in other Midwest states. “From Pennsylvanian, Indiana and Ohio, the milk is being processed in those states.”
Philibeck says there is current interest from a California cheese processor to expand in Michigan or Indiana, but any expansion takes at least two years before it can be up and running.
