Dairy groups say school meals need milk

Dairy groups are highlighting the importance of milk during school meals.

National Milk Producers Federation’s Claudia Larson tells Brownfield, “Research has shown for a lot of students, the healthiest meals they have are while they’re at school and through the school meal programs,” she says.

Larson says low-fat flavored milk has been shown to increase overall healthy meal consumption at school.

“When low-fat flavored milk is an option in our schools, we see less milk thrown away and less food waste, and we also see increased consumption in milk,” she says.

NMPF, along with the International Dairy Foods Association and the School Nutrition Association recently released a factsheet on the nutritive benefits of milk which they say is under-consumed.
