Dairy leader continues push for foreign worker legislation

American Dairy Coalition’s Laurie Fischer during World Dairy Expo presentation

The leader of the American Dairy Coalition says she is working to get the votes to support the Ag and Legal Workforce Act so America’s farmers have the workforce they need.  CEO Laurie Fischer tells Brownfield, “We need to get to 218 and we are working, like I said, every day counting not only the co-sponsors but all of the other individuals that have agreed to vote in favor of the bill.”

Fischer says to get a vote on Congressman Bob Goodlatte’s package which creates an H2-C year-round visa and requires using the e-verify system, House leadership needs to see support.  “They’re going to be very skeptical of bringing another immigration bill to the floor because prior to their break in August, they brought bills to the floor on immigration and neither one passed.”

Fischer says farmers should continue to call their Representatives in Congress and ask them to not only support the bill but to sign on as a co-sponsor.  She says Speaker Paul Ryan promised a floor vote if there is enough support.

She says there are several supporters and 102 bipartisan co-sponsors so far.

Fischer says there are still some Wisconsin Congressional members that are not committed to the bill.  “We have Congressman (Sean) Duffy and Congressman (Mike) Gallagher that are co-sponsoring, but we would like to see Representative (Ron) Kind and the other Congressional delegation (sign on.)”
