Dairy leaders welcome Perdue’s farmer aid announcement

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue’s announcement of a 12-billion-dollar assistance program for farmers affected by trade tariffs and lost markets was welcomed by dairy leaders.

American Dairy Coalition President Laurie Fischer tells Brownfield they appreciate the help, but says, “Our best way for us to move forward  is to have these issues dealt with and have agreements made so that we don’t risk losing contracts and losing our market that we have worked so hard to gain to other countries.”

National Milk Producers President Jim Mulhern says the announcement of assistance is in line with what they’ve asked the administration to do.  He also urges the administration to complete NAFTA and other trade deals.

The assistance plan announced Tuesday will use USDA’s existing authority through a combination of direct payments to farmers, commodity purchases for feeding programs, and additional export market development.
