Dairy market rollercoaster continues
A market advisor says some cash dairy prices have seen big peaks and valleys recently.
Katie Burgess with Ever.ag tells Brownfield the cheese market recently saw a record followed by a rapid fall. “We’ve seen the barrel cheese market two weeks ago had an all-time high of $2.62 and some change per pound, but as quickly as it got up there, it fell back pretty quickly as well seeing nearly a fifty-cent drop in just a few weeks time.”
Burgess says the butter market appears to have had its price peaks earlier than usual this year, and she says buyers might have stocked up early. “As we’re thinking about fall, on one hand, you’re like if it’s high, is it going to go even higher and set a new all-time high this year, or the other scenario and the one that seems to be playing out is if everyone bought what they needed, are we going to go a little bit lower.”
Burgess says with plenty of time for retailers to prepare for Thanksgiving and Christmas sales, she is not ruling out a butter market rebound.
