Dairy markets end week higher

The dairy markets closed out the short trading week with higher prices.

Katie Burgess with Ever.ag tells Brownfield a couple of products showed signs of strength Thursday. “On Thursday, we got the market up to $1.6725. That is a new year-to-date high for the cheese market. We also saw butter rebound a bit. Nonfat dry milk as well got up to $1.97. That’s the highest level it’s been since 2014.”

Burgess says the cheese market has been going up and down, but when you look at the trend since the start of the year, prices are slowly gaining. “I think we’re just continuing in that pattern which would put this go-around to the high $1.60’s and maybe even hit a $1.70 price. Not exciting prices for dairy producers by any means, but a whole lot better than they were at the beginning of the year.”

Burgess says the butter market had incredible trading volumes during March.  Although not as large as November and December, she says new trade data also shows that February exports were nearly double what they were a year ago, and butter is a big part of that trading volume.
