Dairy Pricing Association seeks change in the checkoff

The leader of the Dairy Pricing Association is asking producers to back a change in the dairy checkoff.  Robin Berg of Taylor, Wisconsin tells Brownfield they’re asking dairy producers to sign a petition to take to Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue. “Take two cents of that fifteen cents today and have that used towards Dairy Pricing (Association) to buy real dairy products, cheese, butter, and powder, surplus products from the marketplace for our humanitarian community.”

Berg says redirecting that two cents would promote dairy products by putting products in the hands of consumers while reducing the excess product, helping to raise the milk price. “Two cents a hundredweight will bring in over 40-million dollars to our organization, and on a 250-day trading (market) in the United States, that would equate to about two carloads of cheese per day.”

Berg says they would like to get at least 4-thousand signatures, or around ten percent of the country’s dairy producers to support the checkoff change.

Dairy producers and milk handlers can sign the petition online.

Berg spoke to Brownfield during the WPS Farm Show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
