Dairy’s role in National School Breakfast Week

It’s National School Breakfast week and the American Dairy Association of Indiana is highlighting the importance of breakfast in schools and the role dairy plays in it.

Brooke Williams is the director of communications.

“It’s really important to us and to our dairy farmers to get that nutrition in students early on in the day,” she says. “Without breakfast students might complain of a grumbling stomach and won’t be as academically successful so it’s really important to get them down to the cafeteria.”

She says dairy has some of the most important nutrients and starting the day off with a dairy product can carry a student over until lunch time.

Indianapolis Colts Tight End Jack Doyle helped kick off National School Breakfast week.

He tells Brownfield he starts his day off with dairy every morning.

“I eat my yogurt every morning so that’s definitely my go to,” he says. “I drank milk growing up – that’s what I was raised on, so I’m still a true dairy guy to this day.”

The event took place at IPS Longfellow Middle School today, where more than 250 students eat school breakfast daily.

The Fuel Up to Play 60 program launched by the NFL and the National Dairy Council teaches students that a diet of nutrient-rich foods combined with 60 minutes of exercise each day can lead to a healthy lifestyle.
