Deadline approaching for Iowa farmers to file land leases under state ag landlord lien law

Brownfield's Erin Anderson interviews Austin Peiffer from Ag and Business Legal Strategies.

The associate attorney at Ag and Business Legal Strategies says Iowa farmers should act soon to finalize their land leases ahead of the 2026 crop year.

Austin Peiffer tells Brownfield, “You must file a financing statement within twenty days before the lease is scheduled to start to get special priority. If the lease starts on March 1st, you need to file within twenty days of that. This is just a protective measure just like getting insurance.”

He tells Brownfield filing early also helps protect farmers.

“Most farmers would much rather pay their landlord than letting the bank hold their debt,” he says. “We often assist our clients with perfecting a landlord lien to ensure that all parties get paid adequately.”

Peiffer encourages both parties to discuss the details of their agreement prior to the March 1st deadline.
