Delayed soybean emergence worrying some farmers

A Bayer agronomist says some farmers are concerned about delayed soybean emergence.

Lance Tarochione, who’s based in west central Illinois, says some early planted soybean fields are struggling this spring.

“A few people are frustrated that their early beans are not up yet in some cases, and there’s a little bit of growing concern that that soil, you know, got a rain on it after planting and set up pretty hard.”  He says, “And then we’ve stayed dry and we’ve stayed cool.”

He tells Brownfield farmers need patience and warmer weather.

“I think the right thing to do is give them time.”  He says, “If you’re starting to find a lot of broken necks, or if you’re starting to find dead rotten, mushy plants, those are indications that you’re getting close to it’s time to give up and start again.”

Tarochione says recent moderate rains should also help with soybean emergence.
