Delta to get some rain before turning dry

An ag meteorologist says the Delta will get additional rains heading into the weekend, building on the moisture received over Labor Day weekend.

Drew Lerner with World Weather Incorporated says it’s welcome start to September after the region experienced mostly dry, crop stressed August.

“It will probably fall Thursday through Saturday and southern parts of the Delta could get heavy rain. The models are starting to back off on some of the intensity of rain, but it still looks like one to three inches of rain will fall from Louisiana to southern Mississippi.”

He says the northern Delta isn’t likely to see as much rain before turning drier as September continues.

“I do have a number of analog years that point towards a below normal precipitation bias in the Delta and Tennessee River Basin heading into autumn. It doesn’t mean it won’t rain, but it does mean the rain that occurs will be below normal.”

Lerner says the drier conditions might also impact the already low Mississippi River levels near Memphis and Lerner says he’s monitoring the situation closely.
